History of British Gas
British Gas traces its roots to the Gas Light and Coke Company, founded by Frederick Albert Winsor in 1812.
Incorporated by royal charter under King George III, it was the world’s first public utility, supplying “town gas” for lighting to London streets and homes.
By the mid-20th century, the industry evolved dramatically. The Gas Act 1948 nationalised over 1,060 private and municipal gas firms, merging them into twelve regional gas boards.
On 1 May 1949, the Gas Light and Coke Company became the North Thames Gas Board, marking a shift from private to public ownership. In 1973, Britain’s twelve regional gas boards were consolidated into the British Gas Corporation, creating a single state-owned entity responsible for gas production, distribution, and retail across the UK.
The watershed moment came in 1986 with the Gas Act, which privatised the industry. British Gas plc was floated on the London Stock Exchange, issuing over 4,025 million shares and transitioning from a public utility to a publicly traded company.
A decade later, in 1997, British Gas plc was demerged into three separate companies—Centrica, BG Group, and National Grid. Today, British Gas operates as a subsidiary of Centrica, serving around ten million homes and remaining the UK’s largest gas supplier.
